How Tall Will a Dogwood Tree Grow?

How Tall Will a Dogwood Tree Grow? thumbnail
Dogwood trees grow at slow pace, but can reach great heights.

Some dogwood species are native to the United States, according to the National Gardening Association. Flowering dogwoods are grown for their attractive flowers, and winter dogwoods are grown for their striking stems. Both varieties reach various heights. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Winter dogwoods grow 8 to 10 feet, but can be kept shorter with regular pruning. Flowering dogwoods, however, grow as tall as 40 feet.

    Significance

    • The same species of dogwood grows at different heights when planted in the sun verses partial shade. Dogwoods grow taller when they are planted in partial shade.

    Warning

    • If dogwood trees aren't planted in a well-drained soil, they may suffer from root rot. Root rot causes slow or stunted growth of the three. Always perform a soil test prior to planting your dogwood tree, and amend the soil if necessary.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Nursery-grown dogwoods have a better chance at growing to great heights rather than dogwoods taken from the woods. Wild-grown dogwoods don't have a good enough developed root system to withstand transplanting.
