How Does a Gas Hot Water Furnace Work?

The heating furnace has several components that work in-tandem.

There are several components to a gas water heater or furnace which work in-tandem. Components such as a basic thermostat, oil burner, heat exchanger, furnace blower, air ducts and fan are all necessary for efficient functionality of the gas hot water furnace. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Thermostat

    • According to Inspectapedia, when the building or house temperature drops below a set temperature, the thermostat will detect this drop. The unit is usually mounted to a central wall within the building or house. In response, the furnace oil or gas burner will automatically "turn on" and regulate the temperature again.

    Oil Burner and Exchanger

    • The heating source, which in this case is gas, will begin burning in order to reach the high temperature or "fan limit" temperature; or until the building/house thermostat detects that the set or desired temperature has in fact been reached.

Hot combustion gases produced by the burning oil or gas is circulated within the furnace's metal heat exchanger, which causes it to get hot. When combustion gas leaves the inside of the heat exchanger, it flows through a vent flue which is connected to the building/house chimney for proper ventilation.

    Air Ducts

    • The air ducts, according to Inspectapedia, permit the consistent movement of cool air from the occupied space within the building or house through the furnace, after which it produces warm or hot air back to that occupied space.

    More Facts

    • As of 2010, new tank-less water heaters exist. While this version of the unit is space-friendly and easier to maintain, its price is rather competitive. According to Rinnai, the tank-less water heater "ensures comfort and prevents scalding (accidents)."
