What Is Rum Distilled From?

Long associated with pirates and Caribbean culture, rum has been a popular spirit since the 17th century. Unlike other alcoholic beverages made from grain or fruit specifically grown for the purpose, most rum is made from sugar production byproducts.

History

According to "Wine Enthusiast" Magazine, the earliest form of rum was produced in Asia. Explorer Marco Polo described drinking a sugar-based fermented beverage while traveling through Persia in the 14th century. Rum, as we know it, originated with the development of the Caribbean sugar industry in the 17th century.

Features

To make rum, manufacturers blend sugar production byproducts sugarcane juice or molasses with water and yeast. When fermentation takes place, the liquid undergoes distillation. The final product, rum, is aged in oak barrels. Like other spirits, aging adds color and brings out subtle flavors.

Uses

In the United States, well-known rum cocktails include Cuba libre (rum and cola), daiquiri, mai tai and piña colada. According to "Cigar Aficionado" Magazine, Caribbean residents believe that good rum can be savored best after dinner, on the rocks, with a little water or served "neat" (no ice).
