The Best Way to Clean Mold Off Wood

Mold in your home, including mold found on wood surfaces, poses a dangerous health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to remove mold from wood surfaces is with a combination of bleach and water.

Cleaning

The CDC suggests mixing 10 parts bleach with 1 part water. Wear protective goggles and gloves as you wet down the wood with this solution. Gently wipe the solution off with a dry cloth to remove the mold particles.

Considerations

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests using mild detergent, such as dish soap or laundry detergent, mixed with water to clean the mold. After washing the area with this solution, vacuum off any remaining particles.

Warning

Mold spores can fly into the air while you wipe it off the wood. The best way to avoid this is to fully wet the wood before wiping with a dry cloth.
