Elevator Mechanic Certification

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), elevator mechanics and contractors in the majority of U.S. cities and states must pass licensure requirements. Certification is also available via nationally recognized apprenticeship programs.

  1. Job Description

    • The BLS explains that the role of elevator mechanics is to repair, maintain and install modern elevators. Elevator mechanics work on a variety of products, including elevators, escalators and moving walkways. Skills required include a knowledge of hydraulics and electronics.

    Certification

    • Successful completion of a nationally recognized elevator mechanic training program allows an individual to gain certification without passing a state licensure exam, in states such as Washington. Accredited training programs that are nationally recognized include the Certified Elevator Technician program, which is sponsored by the National Association of Elevator Contractors, according to the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.

    Apprenticeship

    • The U.S. Department of Labor sponsors elevator mechanic apprenticeship programs that are recognized by state licensure agencies throughout the U.S., according to BLS. Elevator mechanic apprenticeships are organized by the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP). Successful applicants for the program work alongside certified mechanics while completing classroom studies with a qualified NEIEP instructor.
