Why Can't I Edit in an Access Query?
Versions of Microsoft Access prior to 2007 allowed for complex user security settings that could restrict users from changing things like queries based on their user profiles. Access 2007 eliminated many of these capabilities but records can still be locked so users working on the same database cannot change records at the same time. Database versions created in prior versions but used in 2007 retain the settings.

User Settings
-
If you are not being allowed to change an Access query it is probably because you have been restricted from doing so through the application of user-based security settings that were built into database designs in versions prior to 2007. You should be able to see if there are such restrictions by looking at the properties list for the query.
Password Recovery
-
Unfortunately, you may not be able to change the settings without password access. Hopefully, you will be able to eliminate user security settings from within Access 2007, build a new query, or export and import data into a new database structure.

Locked Records
-
Access 2007 and later eliminated most user-level security, but do allow for locking records in multi-user databases. Check the properties list to see these settings. Someone else may have opened a record to edit it and did not close again when finished.
