How Is Lemongrass Grown?

Lemongrass is a tropical plant used to flavor many dishes, including soups and curries, and to try to heal illnesses. Growing it is simple and may be done both indoors and outdoors. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Beginning the Process

    • Find the freshest lemongrass possible at the grocery store. Begin with five or six plants, depending on the amounts of lemon grass required in the recipes you'll be using. Most call for at least one stalk, if not five or six. Trim a bit off the top of the stalk and get rid of any parts that looks dead or dying. Put the grass in a shallow glass of water in a window with plenty of sun.

    Potting and Growing

    • After roots appear and begin to grow, transfer the lemongrass to a pot of soil. If you live in a warm climate, the lemongrass may be planted outside, although it is easier to care for indoors. The plant should be in a sunny, warm area for best results. Moisture is also helpful to grow the best plants, as they are meant to be grown in tropical environments.

Continuing to Grow and Using Lemongrass

    • To continue to grow lemongrass, simply repeat this process. Your plants will multiply quickly. Lemongrass is most popularly used to flavor soup, where it is used as a stock ingredient. Thin slices may be used to add flavor to salad. It should be crushed for use in curry recipes.
