Illinois law ensures that residents can safely dispose of used tires.

Illinois encourages businesses and residents to make use of automobile tire recycling programs that safely dispose of the used material. Finding a way to dispose of your used car tires can be as simple as buying some new ones.

  1. Statistics

    • According to the website The Expired Meter, Illinois citizens are responsible for producing 12 million used car tires every year. The state's landfills do not permit used car tires.

    Retailers and Illinois law

    • Because residents have to dispose of unwanted tires carefully, Illinois law mandates that all auto tire retailers have to accept used tires for recycling during a purchase of new tires. This policy provides the easiest way consumers can dispose of their old tires or tires in need of replacement.

    EPA

    • The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsors an annual tire recycling program. During the program, citizens bring in their old tires for collection with no fee attached. The program imposes a drop-off limit of 200 tires at one time, but the EPA can arrange a private pickup for those with more tires to discard. Businesses such as tire dealers, gas stations, commercial trucking companies and auto body repair shops are prohibited from participating.
