How to Compare Services of Internet Connections
With the popularity and necessity of the Internet growing, Internet providers are clamoring for your business. In order to choose an Internet connection that is right for you, it is important to start your process of comparison armed with a few important pieces of information.
-
Types
-
In the USA, Internet service is most commonly available over telephone lines (both land and cellular), cable and satellite. Dial-up connections over telephone lines are generally the slowest. Broadband (or high speed) connections are offered over satellite, cable and DSL. To help make your comparison process more manageable, start by finding out which technologies are available in your area. Tools like The List (see Resources) can help you to determine which companies are operating in your area.
Speed
-
Speeds for dial-up start around 14.4 kilobits per second and max out at about 56 kilobits per second. Broadband services over cable, satellite and DSL start at about ten times the maximum of dial-up. If you're only planning to check your e-mail over your Internet connection, dial-up will often suffice. If you're planning to watch videos and download music, having a broadband connection will make that process much smoother. Determine your needs and intended usage and choose a technology that will suit them.
-
Price
-
Prices for dial-up Internet connections start at around $5 per month and top out around $25. Broadband connections start around $20 per month and can reach $100 for the fastest, dedicated connections. When shopping around, be aware that companies often offer cheaper introductory pricing to lure new clients.
Considerations
-
Be aware that some ISPs charge you for equipment rental. For example, if you decide to access the Internet over satellite, cable or DSL, the ISP may charge you to rent a dish or modem. Also be aware that some companies charge for setup and installation.
