What Is the European Meal Plan at a Resort?

A European plan leaves you on your own for meals.

Resorts and hotels often base prices on the amenities included in the cost for your room. When you choose a European meal plan, often simply called a European plan, the price you pay includes only the cost of your room. No meals are included.

Advantages

A European plan reduces the cost of your lodging and allows you to only pay for the meals that you eat. Since you are not paying for meals at the resort, a European plan encourages you to explore the surrounding area and enjoy local restaurants and markets.

Alternatives

Alternatives to the European meal plan include the American plan, which includes three meals in the cost of the room; the Modified American plan, which includes two meals, often breakfast and dinner; the Continental plan, which includes a simple continental breakfast and the Bermuda plan, which includes a full breakfast.

Considerations

Choosing a European plan may prove more expensive than a plan that includes meals under some circumstances. If the resort is located far from local restaurants and markets, for example, transportation can add considerable cost to the price of your meals.
