Probiotic Yogurt

Acidophilus, or Lactobacillus acidophilus, is a bacteria that produces lactic acid. Acidophilus lives in the small intestines and vagina and it is thought to be good for digestion.

  1. Probiotics

    • Acidophilus is categorized as a probiotic. These are bacteria and other organisms that have medicinal uses. Some food products, usually dairy, boast probiotic cultures, the most common being yogurt. Acidophilus is also available in supplement pill or liquid form, and these supplements should be taken on an empty stomach.

    Medicinal Uses

    • Acidophilus is thought by some doctors to help with digestion, diarrhea and high cholesterol. Acidophilus is used to help treat candidiasis, and there have been human trials to test acidophilus' effectiveness in treating bacterial vaginosis. The results, however, have not shown solid scientific evidence of these medicinal claims.

    Side Effects

    • Acidophilus is generally thought to have few side effects. Those with damage to their intestines, an overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, or with a weak immune system, should not take acidophilus because of its interaction with the intestinal tract,. Consult your doctor before taking acidophilus.
