The Desert Naval Uniform Regulations
The United States Navy Uniform Regulations govern Navy attire from head to toe. Rules for which uniform is worn where are strictly enforced. There are exceptions, but they are difficult to come by.

The Desert Uniform
-
The desert uniform is a brown camouflage utility uniform. The uniform includes all clothing. Shirt, pants, jacket and coat are brown camouflage, as are caps, hats and helmet covers. Undershirts and socks must be brown or olive green. Footwear is brown desert boots.
When It Is Worn
-
Certain situations require the desert uniform. Personnel in combat zones, working in difficult field positions, or assigned to joint commands wear it when on duty or traveling to and from work. Camouflage is never worn while off-duty.
-
Exceptions
-
Superior officers or other authorized personnel can grant exceptions. Absolutely no modifications are allowed without approval. That includes modifying uniforms to accommodate pregnancy. Permission even has to be granted for removing an outer shirt while working.
Uniform Changes
-
The Navy periodically improves and updates uniforms. Changes to the desert uniform are scheduled for 2011, but no details are available yet.
