Yucca Plant Care Problems

Yucca plants produce deep green foilage.

Yucca is a succulent plant that prefers to be grown in bright light. Despite the plant's ability to withstand little rainfall and intense heat, yuccas are prone to their share of plant care problems.

Considerations

Overwatering a yucca is a serious problem that can lead to plant damage. Yuccas require well-draining soil. Regular watering of a yucca planted in poorly draining soil could cause the same damaging effects as overwatering.

Alternatives

Yuccas are susceptible to fungal diseases. Fungicides help yucca plants from developing new infections, but not in every case. Additionally, some fungal infections cause cosmetic damage to the yucca, which is irreversible.

Prevention/Solution

Yuccas don't respond well to certain weather elements. Freezing temperatures and hail damage the plant. To prevent weather-related damage, cover the plant prior to bad weather.

Warning

Yucca plants heavily damaged by a fungal infection may spread the disease to other plants. Discard the infected plant as soon as possible.

Theories/Speculation

Occasionally, insects such as weevils, thrips and scales cause damage to a yucca. Handpick the insects off of the plant or use an insect spray if the insects become overwhelming.
