Fuel Economy in Pickup Trucks

MPG

Miles per gallon, or MPG, is the unit of measure for fuel efficiency. MPG is split between city and highway driving. The highway driving MPG is usually higher than the city, because city driving involves slower travel and stop and go traffic. Consumers need to account for both numbers.

Government Reports

The federal government aids consumers in finding the most fuel efficient pickup trucks. Environmental Protection Agency reports categorize pickup trucks under small pickup and standard pickup.

Small Pickup

Small pickup trucks with the best fuel economy have an MPG highway rating between 25 to 27 according to the government fuel economy reports. For city driving, small pickup trucks have an MPG of 19 to 22.

Standard Pickup

According to the federal government report, standard pickup trucks have, on average, an MPG highway setting of 22. City driving for a standard pickup is close to 21 on average.
