Most modern day LCD televisions are manufactured as either 1080 screens or 720 screens. The number in these measurements refers to the number of horizontal scan lines in the display resolution. The higher the number, the more scan lines, the more clear and detailed the picture. Some smaller or older LCD televisions come in varying numbers, such as 480, 360 and 240. Compare televisions with varying numbers in-store to determine your desired picture clarity.

Progressive scan televisions use a differing picture display method than older televisions, which results in a higher quality display and an easily scalable picture. Cost can be the determining factor for many television purchases. While almost anyone would prefer a 1080p television, they will be the most costly.
