Systems Analyst Vs. Network Administrator

Systems analysts and network administrators must be good communicators.

Although systems analysts and network administrators are both qualified to work with computer networks, their responsibilities are very different. However, both of these positions may require individuals to have similar training and skills.

Function

A systems analyst is in charge of putting together a computer system that meets the needs of a company or organization. They must use their knowledge of software programs and computer networks to plan, analyze and update computer systems. Network administrators are responsible for maintaining established computer networks including monitoring, repairing and updating the software and hardware that is used within the network.

Education

Both systems analysts and network administrators are required to have excellent communication, math and computer skills. Systems analysts must have a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field to qualify for work in this field. Network administrators may qualify for entry-level positions with an associate degree and related work experience.

Salary

Systems analysts earned an average of $78,830 a year in 2008, according to salary information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Network administrators typically earn less. In 2008, the BLS reported that network administrators earned a median annual salary of $66,310.
