Can Dust on My Fans in My Computer Cause Problems?
Dust on fans is more a symptom than a problem. The fan will work almost as well dusty as clean, but if it is dusty, so is the rest of of the computer hardware.

The Purpose of Fans
-
Almost all electric devices waste some energy producing unwanted heat. The fans in your computer remove some of this heat to protect the computer--which can become damaged by prolonged exposure to heat.
Symptom Instead of Problem
-
The dust on the fans indicate that all the interior of your computer may be dusty--the fans are usually easier to see than the other components. You will have to take the covers off your computer to get a good look at the other components. Unplug the computer before taking the covers off. You should know that the interior components can still shock you long after you turn off the power--especially if you have an old style CRT monitor instead of one of the newer LCD screens.

Solving the Problem
-
The solution is to clean the dust out of your computer. Usually, this is a once-a-year job--depending on how dusty your environment is. You can buy cans of pressurized air with long straw-like nozzles in computer or hardware stores.
