  1. Traditional Uses

    • Native Americans treated kidney diseases, stomach troubles and skin problems with a liquid made by boiling dandelion herb in water. Europeans used the herb as a treatment for conditions such as eye problems and skin boils, while Chinese herbalists used it as a treatment for appendicitis, breast inflammations and digestive disorders.

    Benefits

    • Dandelion root may be useful in improving gallbladder and liver function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dandelion root improves the digestion and has mild laxative effects. It also improves the health of the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Healthcare providers prescribe dandelion root to support liver detoxification.

    Side Effects

    • People who are allergic to ragweed and related plants like daisies or marigolds may be allergic to dandelion.

      Dandelion may slow the rate at which the liver changes and breaks down certain types of medication. It may increase the clinical effects and side effects of certain medications and make others less effective, depending upon the type of medication.
