Procedures for Home Incarceration and Ankle Bracelets for Federal Inmates
As more federal and local prisons across the country face issues of overcrowding, many district judges are giving convicted criminals sentences of house incarceration instead of traditional jail stays. These include a monitoring ankle bracelet that is attached by the police department, as well as other procedures.

GPS Monitoring

Once the ankle bracelet is attached to the inmate, the bracelet is turned on, activating the internal GPS system. The GPS not only monitors whether the inmate is staying within the allowed area (that is, his home and yard) but also tracks the inmate should he attempt to escape house arrest.

If the inmate escapes, the company in charge of the monitoring system should alert the police immediately. The inmate will then be tracked by GPS and picked up by law enforcement and, in most cases, brought to jail for violation of house incarceration.

While the person that is under house arrest may have access to most of the luxuries that she had before being arrested, she is still considered to be an incarcerated individual. This means that she may not engage in additional illegal behavior and, in many cases, may have to check in with a member of the local law enforcement on a regular basis as well as attend legal hearings.
Video Monitoring

Depending on the individual and his crimes, a video monitoring system may be put into the inmate's home in addition to wearing the ankle bracelet. This means that he can be watched at any time during his home incarceration, and any additional wrongdoing he might commit at that time could be recorded for later legal actions.
