Demonstration and Picketing Protocols
Picketing dates back to the labor movement and is an effective form of protest. Demonstrations and protests help make the public aware of important issues by using signs and chants.
-
Signs
-
Picketers are in constant motion, trying to gain attention from passing people using large signs. Picketers can also pass out fliers detailing the points of their issue.
No Weapons
-
Be careful not to bring anything that could be perceived as a weapon, which could include large or thick picketing sign. Demonstrations should always be peaceful.
-
Be Prepared
-
Do not consume drugs or alcohol before picketing or demonstrating. Bring cameras to document the demonstration, and bring bottled water to keep everyone hydrated. Keep a calm demeanor and avoid talking in a loud voice.
Handling the Media
-
Pick one person to speak to the media on behalf of the entire group. Anyone approached by the media should refer them to one designated person.
