Television data used in mobile television services may be obtained through an existing cellular network or via a proprietary network.

Mobile television services may be offered through pay TV services on mobile phone networks, which typically involve a monthly subscription or fee paid on a per program basis. Some mobile TV transmission formats include free-to-air broadcasts, or unencrypted broadcasts that can be received via any broadcast-enabled receiver. Mobile television applications also allow program downloads via the Internet, including recorded programs that can be stored on a mobile device for viewing at a later time.

Many mobile devices lack the memory needed to support the buffer requirements necessary for long hours of mobile TV viewing. Many mobile phones also do not support a mobile television interface, making it necessary for users to purchase LCD display handsets that support mobile TV applications.
