The Purpose of Convex Mirrors

The Purpose of Convex Mirrors thumbnail
Convex mirrors are often used on vehicles.

Convex, or fish eye mirrors, bulge outward, toward the light source. Although the view is distorted, the user is able to see more of his surroundings using a convex mirror. The image created is a virtual image, unable to be projected on a screen.

  1. Automobiles

    • Convex mirrors are often used as side mirrors on automobiles. The mirror expands the driver's rear view.

    Retail Stores

    • Convex mirrors are often installed on the ceilings of retail stores. The mirrors allow security staff to view large areas of the store from a fixed location.

    ATM Machines

    • Banks often install convex mirrors near ATMs. Customers can use the mirrors as a security measure to see behind them during their transactions.

    Cell Phones

    • Convex mirrors are sometimes used on the back of cell phones near the camera lens. The mirror is useful when taking a self-portrait.
