Colonial gardens, also called kitchen gardens, were popular in the 1700s. They were designed to provide families with a wide range of fresh vegetables throughout the year and also included herbs and fruit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Typical Vegetable Selections

    • The garden normally contained a mixture of above-ground and root vegetables. Common above-ground vegetable choices included cabbage, beans, peas, lettuce, squashes and pumpkins. Popular root vegetables were onions, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, radishes and turnips.

    Fruits and Herbs

    • Colonial gardens generally had fruits, along with herbs. Prevalent fruits included berries and melons as well as stone fruit and apple trees. Herbs were utilized for seasonings, food preservation and dye for fabrics, as well as home remedies. Favored herbs included dill, basil, mints, thyme, sage, rosemary and parsley.

    Other Garden Plants

    • If space allowed, settlers frequently planted certain flowers, such as marigolds, around the garden's perimeter to fend off pests. Tobacco plants were also grown in some colonial gardens.
