Computer-Based Diversity Training

Harnessing workplace diversity can aid in maximizing organizational success.

In today's working world, organizations may employ people of various cultures and backgrounds. In fact, nearly one third of Americans identify themselves as belonging to a racial or ethnic minority. Although their ideas and views may differ, everyone has something positive to contribute. Through computer-based diversity training, employers can learn to take advantage of these differences in an efficient manner.

  1. Computer-Based Training

    • Computer-based diversity training is simply an alternative to group classes or one-on-one coaching. It comes in the form of a CD-ROM or online courses. However, it is often a supplementary tool paired with a live instructor.

    Advantages

    • Diversity training in any form provides immediate benefits. According to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Organization, diversity training is important for retention. SIFMA explains that the most important goal of all "...is creating and sustaining an environment where individual differences are respected and hard work and results are rewarded." Naturally, employees who feel discriminated against will not stay with the company, resulting in unnecessary turnover.

Regardless of the form in which it is delivered, the ultimate purpose of diversity training is to help teach employees how to deal with customers of diverse backgrounds, take advantage of cultural differences, be prepared for the effects of cultural biases and remove roadblocks to equality.

Another important purpose of diversity training is to help employees understand the many legal issues associated with a diverse workforce, such as harassment. This is usually done by the HR department, but sometimes an external legal firm may be brought in.

    Efficiency

    • There are many companies online that offer computer-based training in several areas. Regardless of the source, computer-based training is especially useful for cutting costs while supplying employees with the tools they need to help the organization succeed.
