The word "hex" translates into "witch" in the German language.

Hex signs have been seen as far back as up to three centuries ago, and are still seen today as a celebration of folk art and as part of the history of our forefathers and ancestors.

  1. History

    • Hex signs originated with the Pennsylvania Dutch on the sides of barns, houses and stables in the 18th century. The custom was brought over from Switzerland and Germany by German immigrants who came to settle in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas.

    Symbolism

    • It is believed that German farmers in Pennsylvania put up hex signs, which were colored symbols and designs, in order to bring good luck or keep away evil spirits and bad energy.

Many hex signs were colorful, geometric, elaborate and detailed, symbolizing good energy and positive auras.

    Today

    • Hex signs are still put on houses, barns and stables today, but it's generally as a celebration of Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art, culture and history more than it's about keeping away evil spirits.
