California Vehicle Licensing Safety Check

California Vehicle Licensing Safety Check thumbnail
California requires that registered vehicles meet state standards.

Before a vehicle is licensed, or registered, in California it must be verified by a trained vehicle verifier to ensure that it meets all of the state's requirements and safety standards.

  1. Types

    • Vehicle verification is required before a vehicle registration is issued for all vehicles that are brought into California from out of state and those for which the state has no previous record. The verification process for both types of vehicles is the same and must be completed at a California Department of Motor Vehicles office, according to the DMV website.

    Significance

    • The vehicle verification provides information on the vehicle identification number, the odometer reading, the federal certification label and the vehicle's emission label. Both the vehicle verification inspector and the vehicle owner must sign the completed verification form before a vehicle can be licensed and a registration issued.

    Considerations

    • To ensure vehicle safety in California, vehicle owners must also provide odometer mileage disclosure information and smog certification for vehicle registration. Owners of pickup trucks or commercial vehicles must also present a weight certificate. Appointment times are recommended when registering a vehicle, according to the DMV, and appointments are able to be made online.
