HVAC Tech Certification

HVAC techs can earn specialty certification in areas such as air conditioning systems.

Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration technicians, also known as HVAC techs, maintain and repair the systems that heat, cool and control the air quality in commercial and residential buildings. Earning an HVAC tech certification is a way to increase advancement opportunities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Types

There are several types of certification available to HVAC technicians. Entry-level certification is appropriate for those with less than two years of experience; while techs with more experience can become certified in specific types of equipment or systems. HVAC Excellence offers Master Specialist certification in areas such as residential air conditioning and heat pumps.

Features

Certification for an HVAC tech is based on an examination that tests knowledge of core electrical and refrigeration theories. Organizations such as HVAC Excellence require techs to pass a core exam as a prerequisite for certification in areas such as electric heat systems and green awareness.

Potential

The BLS notes that the employment outlook for HVAC techs is expected to increase by some 28 percent through the year 2018. Prospects are especially good for techs who have completed formal training and certification programs, especially in the area of energy efficiency and installing HVACR systems. In May 2008, the median hourly wage for HVAC techs was $19.08.
