Riding lawnmowers have similar starting problems as automobiles.

Riding lawn mowers are more complex machinery than push mowers. Riding mowers have many issues similar to automobiles in regard to failure of the motor to start. Repairs can be costly so check for common issues to help eliminate trips to the repair shop. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Low Fluids

    • Look at the gas and oil levels of the engine. Follow mower instructions to reach proper levels of fluids. Check the filters for clogs or buildup of fluids.

    Electrical Connections

    • Look for loose wires, spark plugs and their connections. Check the charge level of the battery. Charge the battery, and tighten wires and connections.

    Gear Positions

    • Check for improper gear or clutch position. Riding mowers use a parking or neutural gear to engage the engine; the clutch must be depressed completely to engage it while shifting gears.

    Safety Features

    • Verify safety features are engaged. Raise the mower deck so the blades are not rotating; adjust the mower engagement lever. Check the manual to see if a rider is needed to be seated upon the mower for the engine to engage.
