MacBook Case Problems

Some owners of MacBook laptop computers by Apple have reported problems with the cases that include discoloration and cracking, according to MacInTouch. MacBooks have a dedicated following and are among Apple's best-selling products.

  1. Cracking

    • Some early models of the 15-inch MacBook Pro had batteries that swelled, causing the cases to crack at the seams. Apple recalled and replaced all early-production batteries. Some owners also reported case warping, which did not interfere with laptop functions.

    Discoloration and Overheating

    • Owners of some 13-inch white models saw their cases turn yellow. White cases also smudge and scratch easily. More recent models have a glossier finish and still smudge. A commonly reported problem with MacBook cases is overheating. Among users reports were fan problems, hard drive replacement, a melted desk and temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Unibody

    • Apple updated MacBook case construction with its "unibody" design, which uses a single piece rather than multiple parts. The base model 13-inch white model was finally updated with this design in 2008. According to AppleInsider, this has made the product thinner and stronger. Lids open wider and do not fall shut.
