What Training Should an IT Security Specialist Have?

Information technology, or IT, security specialists are sometimes called computer security specialists. They control access to computer networks and protect information stored within those networks. They often work for businesses, federal agencies and educational institutions.

    • You must have a high school diploma or general education diploma and a bachelor's degree to be an IT security specialist. The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium awards certification to those who pass its computer security test, but the certificate is usually not required to work as an IT security specialist.

    Skills

    • IT security specialists must thoroughly understand computer programming and various networking technologies, such as Unix and TCP/IP. Security specialists often work in teams, educating users about computer safety. Therefore, they are expected to have strong interpersonal and communication skills to complement their technological abilities.

    Courses

    • Employers look for people with a computer-related bachelor's degree, such as computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mathematics. Some courses you may take while training to become an IT security specialist are computer architecture, java programming, C++ programming, operating systems and database management.
