Bug infestations on houseplants can harm plants and be a nuisance

If your house plants are attracting bugs, take action to prevent infestation and destruction of your plants. Serious infestations are often impossible to cure, so taking steps to prevent an infestation is key. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cause

    • Insect infestations on house plants can be the result of greenhouse infestation, infestation while out of doors, or infestation that results from plant conditions, such as over watering, which can attract fungus gnats.

    Prevention/Solution

    • W.S. Cranshaw of the Colorado State University Extension Office reports that most insect infestations on house plants originate with a single house plant that was infected prior to being introduced to the house. To prevent bug infestations, isolate new house plants for several weeks before sitting them near other plants, and look for signs of infestation. "Seriously infested plants are often best discarded," Cranshaw notes.

    Control

    • If you have noticed insects in any of your houseplants, stop the bugs before an infestation happens. Cranshaw recommends spraying foliage with water to dislodge bugs, but to take care not to over water the soil. Spraying insecticidal soaps, found in lawn and garden stores, can also kill bugs on plants.
