What is the Principle of a Steam Generator?

What is the Principle of a Steam Generator? thumbnail
Power plants use fuels, such as coal, to generate steam.

Since ancient times, people have used water as a power source. The technological advances developed during the Industrial Revolution allowed people to design machines that increased the efficiency of water as an energy source.

  1. Function

    • The pressure from steam power can be used to power machinery. Early steam engines powered trains and boats, which allowed the transportation of people and goods over vast distances. Today, they generate electricity.

    Process

    • The steam generator operates under a simple principle. Water is heated, and the steam is used to power turbines that make generators run. Generators are rotating machines that convert mechanical power into electricity. The steam reverts back into water as it cools and can be used again.

    History

    • Thomas Edison created the first power plant that used a steam turbine to generate electricity.

    Advantages

    • Using steam as an energy source has many benefits. Water is a renewable resource that is constantly replenished by Earth's rain cycle. It also is inexpensive and easily collected. Possessing a high heat capacity, water does not emit harmful toxins when heated.
