TIG Welding Information
Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding uses an electrical arc to weld metals together.
-
Electrode
-
A TIG welding machine has a tungsten electrode that establishes the electric arc with the metal being welded. TIG welding differs from metal inert gas (MIG) welding in that TIG welding does not consume the electrode.
Filler Rods
-
Because the electrode in TIG welding is permanent and not melted into the weld, filler rods are the only way to add metal to a weld.
-
Gas Shielding
-
TIG welding uses inert gas, such as argon, to protect the weld from oxidation. For this to work, the gas must envelop the entire area surrounding the weld.
Application
-
TIG welding can be used with steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper and other metals.
