Online medical certification prepares individuals for careers in various medical fields, including medical transcription, medical office management, health care informatics, gerontology and fluoroscopy. Certification programs may be completed in addition to a degree program, although this is not always required.

Time Frame

The time it takes to complete an online medical certification varies between schools and programs. For example, the medical transcription program offered through Meditec can take three to six months to complete, whereas the fluoroscopy program offered through the Pima Medical Institute takes about five to six weeks to complete.

On-Site Courses

Some online medical certification programs, such as the fluoroscopy program offered through the Pima Medical Institute, requires students complete some work on a campus. However, other programs, such as the medical office manager program offered through Meditec and the health-care informatics certificate that University of Phoenix offers, can be completed solely online.

Tuition

The tuition rates for online medical certification programs varies between schools, but most range from around $1,000 to $3,000, as of 2011. Many distance-learning schools offer financial assistance to students who are eligible.
