Being certified as a CPS technician allows you to check children's car seats for safety and proper installation.

National CPS (child passenger safety) technician certification training occurs in a four-day class and certifies the recipient for two years. Students will learn proper car seat installation and safety belt use.

  1. Instruction

    • You will be required to complete classroom instruction, hands-on training doing car seat installations, and participating in a community event demonstrating car seat installation and seat belt use for parents. Students will receive a technician workbook as part of their training.

    Cost

    • The registration fee for the certification course is $75 as of Oct. 1, 2009.

    Age

    • Technicians must be at least 18 years of age when the class begins. Anyone who completes the course under the age of 18 will not be certified at its completion.

    Testing

    • You must pass all three hands-on skill assessments, the checkup event and score at least an 83 percent on the written assessment to obtain certification. You must repeat the entire course if you do not pass the first time.

    Class Locations

    • Classes are offered around the country. Find a class near you at the National CPS Certification website (see Resources).
