Toyota Supra History Information

The Toyota Supra was first manufactured by the Toyota Motor Company in 1979 and went through four generations, called marks, before Toyota retired the sports car in 2002. Initially, the Japanese automaker based the Supra on its Toyota Celica.

  1. Mark I

    • The Supra's first generation spanned from 1979 to 1981 and featured a body that was slightly longer and wider than the Celica. The Supra Mark I also featured an engine that was very similar to the Toyota 2000GT's engine. Initially, Toyota intended the Supra to compete with the then-popular Datsun Z-Car.

    Mark II

    • The Supra's second generation covered the 1982 to 1986 model years. In mid-1986, the Supra was no longer based on the Celica and had become its own, unique self. The Mark II Supra came in two styles, the L (luxury) and P (performance) models.

    Mark III

    • The third generation of the Toyota Supra was manufactured from 1986 to 1992. Officially, the third generation's first model was designated as the 1986.5 model.

    Mark IV

    • Toyota launched the fourth generation of the Supra in 1993 with the aim of making the car a serious performance car. Toyota stopped making the Supra for Canada in 1997, the U.S. in 1998, and altogether in 2002.
