Why Are LCD Projector Bulbs Expensive?

LCD projector bulbs can cost between $300 and $600 to replace. Prices vary depending on projected bulb life and performance and efficiency ratings. They are this expensive for several reasons.

  1. Materials

    • Projector lamps function by igniting high-pressure mercury vapor, as opposed to igniting a coil the way a traditional light bulb does. You see light when electricity jumps across the vapor that is compressed in a quartz tube. Mercury vapor is much more expensive than the basic metal and glass of a traditional bulb.

    Manufacturing

    • Mercury vapor is a dangerous chemical and safely compressing it into a small tube is complicated. The manufacturing process and the labor behind it is therefore costly.

    Bulb Life

    • LCD projector bulbs generally last at least 1500 hundred hours, and some are advertised to last up to 4000 hours. This is one factor that justifies the purchase price for many consumers. As long as people are willing to buy them at a high price, manufacturers will continue to sell them.
