What is the Safest Way to Travel with Money?

Travelers shouldn't carry all of their money in one place, like a wallet.

Travelers, unfamiliar with their surroundings, often make easy targets for thieves. However, with good planning and vigilance you can thwart the efforts of those looking for an opportunity to take advantage.

Spread the Wealth

The saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" could be loosely translated to apply to travelers and their money. The best advice is to keep cash and valuables in various places---a wallet, a money belt or with a traveling companion---to prevent losing it all to theft.

Money Belt

The U.S. Department of State recommends a pouch or money belt as the best place to carry money, credit cards, passports and other valuables while traveling. The pouch or money belt is most effective when worn under clothing. Pouches can be worn around the neck, calf or waist or attached to a belt. Purses, wallets, fanny packs and backpacks are too easily stolen.

Decoy

To throw off pickpockets and thieves, some travelers carry a dummy wallet with a minimal amount of money and maybe some expired credit cards.

ATM Safety

When using an ATM machine, be watchful for potential thieves who may try to spy you entering your PIN number. Avoid machines in poorly lit locations, and don't forget to take your receipt.
