Kinesiology & the Taping of Shin Splints

Shin splints are not a serious medical problem, but they are painful and bothersome. They occur when the tibia or large bone in the lower leg, also called the shinbone and the connective tissue that attach muscles to it, are overloaded.

  1. Significance

    • Kinesiology tape is a stretchy thin tape--considered both a sports tape and therapeutic tape--that provides relief from pain and inflammation associated with shin splints. It can also relieve fatigue and stiffness in overused muscles and prevent overstretching.

    Function

    • To apply kinesiology tape, flex the foot and apply the tape without stretching it along the length of the shin where the pain is present. You may additionally apply another piece crosswise over the painful spot, stretching only in the middle, but not on the ends.

    Fun Fact

    • Kinesiology tape has been in use for over two decades, but came to real attention during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when athletes wore the tape in bright shades of pink, blue and black.
