Schwinn World Traveler Specifications

According to Jay Pridmore and Jim Hurd, authors of the book "Schwinn Bicycles," the Schwinn World Traveler was one of the bestselling touring bikes on the market from 1973 to 1975. This vintage model's style and specifications might appeal to today's commuters and retro fanatics.

  1. Frame

    • The World Traveler was designed with both male and female riders in mind. Both men's and women's models were produced in the 1970s and originally came in lemon and opaque green coloring. The men's version was available in lightweight, Hi-Ten steel 21- and 23-inch frames. The ladies' version came in a 19-inch frame. Alloy stem and handlebars paired with thinner steel tubing make this bike lighter and therefore easier to handle.

    Pedals & Wheels

    • Araya clincher rims are strong enough to withstand frequent street riding without bending. Alloy demi fenders make for quiet and smooth riding as they protect the cycle from collecting rust, residue and breakage. Chromed rat-trap pedals grip the outer edges of street shoes to improve traction and the steel pedal design helps to prevent wear.

    Brakes & Shifters

    • Schwinn used side-pull brakes with built-in quick release and Shimano shifters to make powering and handling this bicycle easy for cycling novices but durable enough for cyclists with touring experience. The derailleurs shift up and down the gears smoothly, allowing for quicker acceleration. The finger controls are positioned for easy access for both men and women.
