Internet Code of Conduct
Many people enjoy the types of communication and interaction available on the Internet, such as email and instant messaging. However, miscommunication can easily occur when normal communication signals, such as tone of voice or facial expression, are absent. Learning basic etiquette guidelines can prevent miscommunication and conflict.
-
Emotions
-
Be respectful and polite on the Internet. It's difficult to detect emotions such as sarcasm or irony in written text, so consider how your messages may seem to someone who can't hear your tone of voice or see your facial expressions. Never write in all-caps text, since this is considered shouting.
Confidentiality
-
Never publicize the names, email addresses or contact information of other people. In addition, do not post photographs or personal information about other people on the Internet without their permission.
-
Plagiarism
-
Don't take credit for text, photographs or artwork that you did not create, and do not use other people's creations without asking permission and giving credit.
Credibility
-
Don't claim to be an expert on topics for which you are not qualified. Don't offer opinions or services outside of your expertise. In addition, be aware that inaccurate material exists on the Internet. Always check information against a reputable source.
