The History of Heinz Tomato Ketchup

Henry John Heinz founded his namesake company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Heinz released its first ketchup, then labeled with the descriptor "Heinz Tomato Ketchup," in 1876. Since then, the company has become known for the "57 Varieties" shown on the labels of its condiments--but perhaps none are as iconic as the Heinz ketchup bottle. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Artificial Preservatives

    • In 1906, Heinz released a ketchup without artificial preservatives. The company claims that it was the first to do so and cites a history rich with environmental concerns and social responsibility.

    Exports

    • By 1907, the company was exporting its goods to countries and regions including the United Kingdom, Japan, South America and New Zealand. At this point, it was producing more than 12 million bottles annually.

    EZ Squirt

    • In 2000, Heinz added food coloring to the recipe for its line of EZ Squirt colored ketchup. The green, purple, pink, blue, teal and orange toppings were discontinued in 2006.

    Packets and Redesign

    • Heinz ketchup has come in packet form since 1968. Many customers have complained about the difficulty of opening the packets, especially for their children, prompting the remake of the packet in 2010. It is designed to look like the iconic glass bottle, hold more ketchup and open more easily.
