Sightseeing cruises along the Chicago River are popular with tourists.

Chicago, the third largest city in the United States sits on the coast of Lake Michigan and has something for all tourists, ranging from the shops along the Magnificent Mile to water sports on Lake Michigan.

  1. Transportation

    • There are two airports that serve the city, O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport, both of which are approximately 25 miles apart from one another. In addition to traveling by car, Chicago is accessible by train and bus via Union Station. Chicago Transit Authority operates buses and "L" trains throughout the city. Fare cards for both services can be purchased at the rail stations as well as numerous retail locations and both airports. These locations also carry route maps with current schedules. Bicycles are permitted on most buses and "L" trains.

    Activities

    • Runners and cyclists can enjoy the 18 mile Chicago Lakefront Path that winds along Lake Michigan, while those who enjoy water sports can rent a jet ski or boat. Shopping is plentiful along the Magnificent Mile where you can visit high-end retailers such as Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue, or do some one-stop shopping at Water Tower Place, which includes eight levels of retailers. Educational attractions include Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and Adler Planetarium.

    Consideration

    • Weather is a major consideration when planning a trip to Chicago during the months of October to March, as the snowfall can be heavy. The National Weather Service published a study of Chicago snowfall, examining precipitation data from 1971 to 2000. The study revealed the average snowfall was approximately 38 inches annually.
