How Long Do Dentists Have to Go to College?

Preparing for dentistry begins in high school and continues through post-gradute school.

Dentists are schooled in the care and treatment of teeth and tissues in the mouth. Preparing for a career in density requires dedication and hard work in order to complete the studies successfully for licensing. Most dentists enter into a private practice after they become licensed.

Pre-college

Courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math during high school years are recommended in preparation for college. A high school student may take advanced courses and college level courses to gain college credits during their junior and senior years.

Undergraduate

Pre-dental students usually take four years to get a bachelor's degree. They often major in chemistry or biology. Some dental programs allow students to complete their bachelor's degree in combination with their post-graduate studies.

Post-graduate

A Dental Admissions Exam (DAT) is required to be admitted into a dental school. Post-graduate dental programs take about four years to complete. Courses include classes such as anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry and clinical practice. After graduation, the National Board Dental Examinations Part I and Part II are required to become licensed as a dentist in most states.
