Illinois Car Insurance Liability Limits
Illinois law requires a driver who operates a motor vehicle, motorcycle, truck, bus or recreational vehicle to have a minimum amount of liability insurance. A driver should know the required amounts, enforcement of the law and penalties.
-
Amounts
-
To comply with the law, a driver must have a minimum of $20,000 coverage for the injury or death of one person, and $40,000 for more than one person per accident. He must have $15,000 of property damage coverage.
Enforcement
-
A driver stopped by law enforcement or involved in an accident must provide proof of insurance. The Illinois Secretary of State's Office enforces the law through random computer checks of some individuals. A driver chosen by the computer receives a questionnaire requiring him to provide the name of his insurance company and policy number. The information is verified with the insurance company.
-
Penalties
-
A driver who does not provide proof of insurance will have his license plates suspended and owe a fine of at least $500. If a driver operates a vehicle with suspended plates due to a prior insurance violation conviction, the minimum fine is $1,000. To have the suspension lifted, a driver must pay the fine, a $100 reinstatement fee and provide proof of insurance. A repeat offender can have the license plates on his registered vehicle suspended for up to four months.
