Training is a vital part of becoming a patent examiner.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Training Academy provides comprehensive training to prepare new examiners for their career. The standardized patent examiner training program teaches the necessary skills and knowledge of the patent procedure, process and practices.

  1. Identification

    • The United States Patent and Trademark program offers training specific to examiners' technology areas. It is a 12-month program divided into two phases. The program includes a hands-on examination of applications and lab exercises.

    Types

    • Classes typically consist of up to 130 students. Classes are then divided by area of technology into smaller labs with 16 examiners each. The patent training program resources include a class website with all the training materials, program and automation assistance from experienced examiners, a library and a daily lecture schedule.

    Continuing Education

    • Patent examiners continue to receive professional training -- including legal, technical and automation -- throughout their career.
