What Is Spiritual Leadership?

Spiritual leadership is the role of guiding, encouraging and leading a group in spiritual and religious matters. Christian ministers leading worship services, or counseling those struggling with issues of faith, are good examples of spiritual leadership. Spiritual leadership also involves taking responsibility for the spiritual well being of others.

  1. Leading

    • Spiritual leadership is more than simply taking charge of a religious group. Gently guiding and encouraging each individual in their group to be in touch with their spirituality, overcome issues in their lives, and help them reach their spiritual potential is the duty of all spiritual leaders.

    Relying on a Higher Power

    • "Spiritual leaders use their leadership to help bring about change in the lives of others and their communities. For Christian leaders their role is somewhat of a paradox, for God calls them to do something that in fact, only God can do. Ultimately, spiritual leaders cannot produce spiritual change in people; only the Holy Spirit can accomplish this," states Spiritual Leadership by Henry and Richard Blackaby.

    Spiritual Responsibility

    • Spiritual leadership necessitates an acute sense of accountability and responsibility. Christian leaders are accountable to God for the souls of their followers. Thus if they engage in conduct that is unbecoming of a leader, they can not blame their followers when they do the same. Spiritual leaders are called to be accountable, and to not make excuses for their behavior. Instead they assume responsibility to guide their followers through example the way to live a spiritual life.
