Effective Use of Courtroom Technology
Advancements in technology have allowed lawyers to use computers, audio-visual displays, projectors, videoconferencing setups and other equipment when presenting information in court. According to the Federal Judicial Center, use of courtroom technology results in greater efficiency during hearings and trials.

Available Technologies
-
Available technologies vary from one courtroom to another. Courtrooms have implemented projectors and video distribution systems, which allow lawyers to connect personal computers and generate visual displays. Other technologies include real-time reporting of courtroom proceedings, recording of proceedings, teleconferencing and videoconferencing, interactive displays and a variety of digital monitors.
Impact on Lawyer Effectiveness
-
When used carefully, courtroom technology can improve lawyer effectiveness. For example, attorneys can easily present evidence such as digital photographs or audio recordings while they emphasize particular points or direct the flow of testimony. Attorneys must keep jurors interested during evidence presentations. Because jurors often process important points more quickly and thoroughly when following along with visual displays, effective use of courtroom technology can assist in holding their attention. The U.S. District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin suggests that litigants consider use of automated evidence presentation technologies to aid participants in proceedings.

Communication Aids
-
According to the American Bar Association, courtroom technology can also aid communication between participants in judicial proceedings, such as by allowing foreign language interpretation through videoconferencing. Other communication aids include assistive technology, remote appearances and instant messaging.
