What Role Does HR Play in Enforcing a Security Policy?

A human resources (HR) department plays an important role in enforcing a company's security policy. HR is responsible for educating employees on the company's policy and assisting managers in dealing with breaches of policy.

Function

HR ensures a company's policies are followed. It supports managers and staff in following company procedures, protecting the rights of employees and shielding the company from liability. Security policies fall under the domain of HR because the policies exist to maintain the safety of company employees.

Training

HR can provide training for employees. Such training can educate them about the company's security policy and prepare them for what to do if a security policy is broken. Also, conflict avoidance techniques can be taught to help prevent workplace violence.

Enforcement

If a company's security policy is breached, HR can guide the employee and/or manager involved to resolve the violation swiftly and effectively. HR ensures that company policy and laws are followed. It also takes the appropriate steps to restore security.
