What Is the Origin of Confetti? thumbnail
Showering the bride and groom is an ancient tradition.

Today confetti comes in many different shapes and colors. It can be made from paper, plastic or metallic foil, and there are even bio-degradable varieties. It is used at all kinds of celebrations but is traditionally associated with weddings.

  1. History

    • Showering a newly married couple is an ancient custom that dates back to pagan times, when people would throw handfuls of grain or rice over the bride and groom. This was a symbolic ritual to demonstrate their hope that the union would be fruitful.

    Confetti

    • The term "confetti" actually originates from an Italian word for confectionery. In Roman times honeyed sweetmeats were traditionally handed around at births and wedding celebrations. This custom still persists in Italy with sugared almonds being presented to wedding guests.

    Paper Confetti

    • The origins of paper confetti are not really known, although an 1885 issue of "Scientific American" recorded scraps of colored paper being thrown over people in Paris on New Year's Eve, 1881. By the early 1900s, paper confetti was machine-manufactured and sold all around the world.
